Software and reports
What software can and cannot do on an EICR
Software does not itself determine the observation classification. It does not perform the inspection, and it does not replace the competent person on site.
Reviewed 5 October 2026 by Michael (Technical Supervisor) and George Opsenica (Director, Codeex Maintenance Ltd). General guidance, not a reading of your own report and not legal advice.

Where a digital tool can help
Notes and photos
A tablet can store what the inspector photographed and the circuit labels they typed.
A tidier report
Software can assemble the form from those notes. The form is not the judgement.
Paperwork
Previous certificates and limitation notes are easier to find when they are filed with the job.
Admin
Booking, access notes and who received the PDF are office tasks. They are not classification.
Separate the office job from the inspection
Data capture
Notes, circuit labels and photographs can be stored as the inspector types them. The store is a record of what that person entered.
Report assembly
Software can place those notes into the form. The form is not the judgement, and a tidy PDF is not a completed test.
Photo and document storage
Earlier certificates and limitation notes are easier to find when they sit with the job. Filing them does not inspect the installation again.
Workflow and admin
Booking, access notes and who received the report are office tasks. They do not change an observation.
Analytics
A list of past jobs can show patterns in the office. It does not visit the next property, and it does not assign a code there.
The inspection itself
Isolation, tests and what could be seen happen on site. Software does not itself determine the observation classification.
What stays with the inspector
Software does not itself determine the observation classification. A prompt, a photo label or a previous job on the same street does not assign C1, C2, C3 or FI. Under the current A4:2026 EICR format, an FI observation is advisory and does not by itself make the overall assessment unsatisfactory. That sentence is about the report format. It is not a claim that a program can choose FI.
This site does not describe an artificial-intelligence inspection product, because no such product is evidenced here. Smart locks, solar inverters and network equipment can appear in a property. They are parts of the installation or of the building. They are not an inspector.
The words 18th Edition are the common name for BS 7671:2018. Amendments after that book still form part of the standard the inspector is working to. Software does not update that standard by itself.
The inspection is arranged through EICR testing. Code meanings stay on the classification guide.
For general questions, try the EICR guidance assistant. It does not inspect a property, diagnose a fault or approve a report.
