After the report
The first steps after an unsatisfactory EICR
An unsatisfactory result is the overall assessment. The useful next step is the observation schedule, not a single word on the front page. This page is that sequence. It does not replace the page for one code, and it does not invent a rule that every failed report needs another EICR.
Reviewed 5 October 2026 by Michael (Technical Supervisor) and George Opsenica (Director, Codeex Maintenance Ltd). General guidance, not a reading of your own report and not legal advice.

Work through the report in this order
Overall result
Read whether the report is unsatisfactory, and the date of the inspection. The result describes that day.
Observations
List the coded lines. Do not treat the front-page word as the whole job.
C1 and C2
These are the lines that make the result unsatisfactory. Keep them separate from advice.
C3
C3 means improvement recommended. C3 alone does not make the report unsatisfactory.
FI
Under the current A4:2026 EICR format, an FI observation is advisory and does not by itself make the overall assessment unsatisfactory.
Scope of work
Ask for a quotation against the lines that need work or investigation, not against the word unsatisfactory.
Evidence
Keep the report, the quotation, and any completion paperwork together.
Another report
Do not assume a fresh EICR is required. Ask whether the agreed work needs its own certificate instead.
Decide what each line needs
| Line | Next decision | Do not |
|---|---|---|
| C1 | C1 means danger present, and the danger needs immediate action. Deal with that danger before you collect prices for the rest. | Do not file it with the improvement notes. |
| C2 | C2 means potentially dangerous, with urgent remedial action required. Ask for a price against the words on that line. | Do not treat the letter as a price. |
| C3 | C3 means improvement recommended. C3 alone does not make the report unsatisfactory. Keep it off the urgent list. | Do not upgrade it because it is printed under a C2. |
| FI | Under the current A4:2026 EICR format, an FI observation is advisory and does not by itself make the overall assessment unsatisfactory. Arrange the investigation that line describes. | Do not price the investigation as a finished repair. |
| Evidence | Keep the report, the agreed scope, and the paperwork for the work that was actually done. | Do not throw the schedule away once the work is booked. |
| Another EICR | Ask for a new condition report only when someone needs a new description of the existing installation. | Do not assume the repair itself is that report. |
Separate the codes before you ask for a price
C1, C2, C3 and FI are not interchangeable. A mixed report needs the lines sorted before anyone prices them. The page for a mixed report is the place to order those lines. Each code page still owns the definition of that code.
There is no universal repair price. The quotation follows the observations, the access, and the materials. This page does not add a deadline of its own. Where a specified tenancy has a remedial period, that period is on the 28-day page, and only for the duty that page describes.
Read a mixed report on how to work through several codes. The remedial service is remedial work after a failed EICR.
