Tower Hamlets licenses shared homes across the borough (additional HMO licensing, 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2029). Its selective licensing scheme for Weavers, Whitechapel and Spitalfields and Banglatown ended on 30 September 2026. The council says it is considering options for a new scheme, and licences already issued stay valid until they expire.
Around Bow, most addresses are in Bow East and Bow West wards. Tower Hamlets Council has no selective licensing, so a home let to a single household there doesn't need one. Ward boundaries don't follow postcodes, so check the exact address with the council.

My Bow house was built before 1919. Will the EICR mean lifting floorboards?
Not normally. An EICR is a non-invasive inspection. The electrician tests each circuit and opens a sample of sockets, switches and light fittings to check connections, but doesn't take up floors or open walls. In an older house, clear access to the loft, the consumer unit and any cupboards with wiring helps the inspection cover more of the installation, so fewer parts have to be recorded as not inspected.
